I am Cristina Escobar and you are listening to Radio Havana Cuba…This country is bracing for a big expansion of the private sector, having just scrapped a ban on most private activities… This means a strict list of 127 permitted activities for which private - or self-employed - workers could apply for a license, will be substituted for a number of prohibited activities… This has been long overdue, with private sector workers and the academics calling for an update to the legal framework for years, and it is finally happening… Why is this such a big deal? What will it mean for the Cuban economy?
